The first day of summer – The first of June is the International Children's Day. This day once again reminds us that every child has the right to "a standard of living adequate for the child's physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social development”. Further, a child who is temporarily or permanently deprived of his or her family environment has the right to assistance and protection from the State (Unicef Convention on the Rights of the Child, Article 27, Article 20).
"Each member of society has to take care of the welfare of children every day and for every child, especially for those in need of more care. We should never leave behind these values, especially in times of pandemic which has greatly changed everyone’s lifestyle”- says Tamar Kurtanidze, projects manager of Caritas Czech Republic.
Despite Covid-19 pandemic, last month we have launched the distance learning courses “Child oriented care” for the staff of the Tbilisi children’s orphanage to help improve the quality of services for children with disabilities, create environment approximated to family surroundings and promote social inclusion.
We would like to extended our gratitude to the United Nations Children’s Fund – UNICEF for sharing important study materials developed by UNICEF consultants.
To once again emphasize the importance of caring for children and our readiness to keep cooperation, on this important day we have symbolically visited our project partners Tbilisi children’s orphanage to meet the training participants. Afterwards we met Lia Dzidziguri, the Director of G. Zhvania Pediatric Academic Hospital where soon the the construction process of a special building with the pediatric long term care unit will be finalized by the clinic.
The activity is a part of Caritas Czech Republic project “Establishment of Children’s long-term and palliative care services in Georgia”, initiated by the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia (MoLHSA) with the financial support of Czech Development Agency. The aim of the project is to contribute to the deinstitutionalization process of Tbilisi infants’ orphanage through developing appropriate long-term care services for children in need of special social and medical care.
