Project aim: enhance climate resilience and the quality of urban life in Poti Municipality through proposed nature-based solutions and increase public awareness.
Project Description: Climate change is increasingly affecting Poti through flooding, heatwaves, droughts, and rising sea levels, putting pressure on urban infrastructure and public well-being. At the same time, many neighbourhoods lack accessible, functional green spaces that can help communities adapt to these growing environmental challenges.
- The project will establish three multifunctional pop-up parklets and rehabilitate one larger climate-adaptive green space in close cooperation with local residents, municipal authorities, environmental experts, and civil society organisations. Each site will be designed to improve urban cooling, manage rainwater, increase biodiversity, and create attractive public spaces for recreation and community activities.
- Educational signage and QR-code learning materials will help visitors understand climate risks, nature-based solutions, and simple actions they can take to protect the environment. Public awareness campaigns, workshops, planting events, and educational activities will actively engage residents, schools, youth, women, and older people in climate adaptation efforts.
- To ensure long-term sustainability, municipal staff and community volunteers will receive practical training on maintaining green infrastructure. The project will also develop a maintenance plan and a replication toolkit, enabling other municipalities across Georgia to apply similar approaches and strengthen their own climate resilience.
- By combining community participation, environmental education, and innovative green infrastructure, the project will create healthier public spaces while supporting the implementation of Poti Municipality's Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP).
The project aims to support the implementation of the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) of the Poti Municipality by introducing nature-based, replicable, and scalable solutions.
Project Results: The project will create approximately 2,500 m² of new and rehabilitated climate-resilient public green space, including three multifunctional parklets and one climate-adaptive recreational area.
- More than 200 community members will participate directly in workshops, educational events, and climate awareness activities, while public campaigns are expected to reach over 5,000 people throughout Poti.
- Municipal technical staff and community volunteers will strengthen their capacity to maintain climate-resilient green infrastructure through specialised training and practical guidance.
- Educational signage, interactive QR-code resources, and awareness campaigns will improve public understanding of climate change, biodiversity, and nature-based solutions.
- Finally, a replication strategy and practical toolkit will enable municipalities across Georgia to replicate successful community-based climate adaptation measures, contributing to more resilient and sustainable cities nationwide.
